Electronic band Brazilbeat Sound System originated in San Francisco, USA,
amidst the percussive rhythms of Brazil and sound system culture, and is now
based in New Zealand.
Percussionist Nego Beto has played music on four continents, produced Reggae
MTV for MTV Brasil, and toured with dozens of high profile bands including
Jamaican legends The Wailers and groundbreaking Brazilian reggae band Cidade
Negra. Nego Beto was born in the African hub of Bahia, northern Brazil, and
raised in Rio de Janeiro, where he spent his youth studying music at the
prestigious Villalobos music school, and performing with samba schools and
cultural groups. In New Zealand he played with the OE:Brazil project as well as
bands including Skankamelia, Blackbird and Sons of Io.
DJ Mara is Californian with a passion for global bass music that treads the nether-
worlds between roots and electronic sounds. Brazilbeat live onstage are a force
to be reckoned with. Their late night sets are legendary, explosive performances
that bounce with percussion played on electronic and acoustic instruments.
Since relocating to New Zealand, Brazilbeat have inflamed festivals including
Rhythm & Vines, Homegrown, Splore, Soundsplash, Sydney Harbour Festival,
Cuba Street Carnival, HomeFest Samoa, Parihaka Peace Festival, Destination
and Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, as well as performing in top venues.
Unfettered by genres, Brazilbeat's creative output reflects a spiritual respect for
Brazilian rhythms and an inextricable link to underground club culture. Their music is available to stream and
